The VBM Project

The VBM Project will capture why Value Based Management evolved as a discipline, who were the pivotal thinkers and evangelists, for what they are best known, how VBM is applied, and where VBM is headed.

As Alfred Rappaport (2006) wrote in his HBR article, Ten Ways to Create Shareholder Value:
"It’s become fashionable to blame the pursuit of shareholder value for the ills besetting corporate America: managers and investors obsessed with next quarter’s results, failure to invest in long-term growth, and even the accounting scandals that have grabbed headlines. When executives destroy the value they are supposed to be creating, they almost always claim that stock market pressure made them do it.

The reality is that the shareholder value principle has not failed management; rather, it is management that has betrayed the principle".
The VBM Project will also outline:
• Key VBM concepts
• Where VBM has worked well
• VBM insights for managers
• VBM challenges for the future
